Yifu Li sculpts an original character out of Super Sculpey. This sculpture is a call to female warriors in games and animations that he is inspired by. Anatomy, drawing and craftmanship really helped Yifu realize his vision in this final version. The pose, costume and details are a main focus for his goal. Super Sculpey is a brand of versatile, polyvinyl chloride (PVC)-based polymer clay that hardens permanently after being baked in a standard home oven. Unlike traditional ceramic clay, it does not dry out when exposed to air, so it can be shaped and sculpted over an extended period.
A sketch was planned to draw the figure to the desired scale ensuring correct proportions in various angles. Next, he began constructing an armature. An armature is an internal skeleton or framework used to support and give structure to the final sculpture, particularly one made from soft, pliable material like clay or wax. This is essential for supporting the sculpture, posing, and structuring.
Next, he cut the wire measuring and cutting several pieces of armature wire for a standing figure, including the weapons and small details like hair and shoes. Wire was employed by twisting and forming a skeleton wireframe. Twisting the wire makes the structure stronger and gives the clay something to grip. He then created the platform affixing the finished wire frame to a solid wooden base using screws and a flange. To add bulk Yifu wrapped aluminum foil around the main body parts to build mass without adding excessive weight. A desired pose was set and bending and adjusting the wire to set the final pose before adding the sculpting medium. Finally small details such as found objects combined the final look of this sculpture.
