Student Name: Selene Wang
Title: Dazed Apprehension
Work type: mixed media
Category: Fine Art

13 yr old Selene Wang creates a larger than life stylized artwork depicting our anxieties and stress with the introspective pressures we internalized as we sleep. Here we see a painted head of a girl with a piece of garment that greats a sense of nostalgia, comfort and association with material acting as a barrier and protection from “said” stress.
According to Selene she says: “My piece “Dazed Apprehension” came to me in a dream. Picture this, a sunny day in your new school, there’s a blacktop that runs along the grassy field— “Two laps today,” your teacher yells. Everyone is ahead of you. Everyone is cheering you on but “secretly” picks at every little imperfection you have behind your back. In reality it isn’t secret, even at all but what can you do? You have nobody else. Then, you notice your nose dripping red. Everyone’s nose is… Before you can form a thought, you wake up and search what this dream really means and discover it’s a sign of anxiety and built-up stress. Overall, stress can affect your life but shouldn’t take it over.”
This artwork although large is meant to be experienced in an intimate way creating awareness of discomforts within us and un-said consequences of our words and action as well as inactions. Yet the blood reminds us of our connection and mortality for each other.
