Student Name: Gianna Xun
Title: Behind the Beauty
Work Type: Fine Art (mixed media and oil on canvas)
Size: 16X16

The stage and the literal representation are set up as a literal visual pedestal to put the viewer on check. According to Giana, this visual contrast highlights people’s what extreme measures people go through to achieve perfection at the cost of their health. Through this work, Gianna hopes to spark reflection on how “we” as a society define success and encourage a culture where well-being is prioritized over image. “we” is defined as a societal trigger that makes us all accountable not just social media but our cultural and societal values。
Gianna uses oil paint on a circular canvas to depict a pair of ballerina feet and the round canvas as a way we see things with our eyes and a bias our eyes hold sometimes. One shows the beauty and elegance of performing ballet, and the other shows the pain of competitive and ideal beauty and the suffering behind. Mixed media demonstrates the contrast of two feet uncovering the reality of hidden suffering beneath the desire for perfection, including real fabric ribbons and bandages to create a more dimensional feel for a visceral provocation.

Student name: Lillian Chen
Title: untitled
Work: Digital: Procreate
Size: variable

The work here presents a gloomy observation on our society. We have a large population, yet we are not engaging with each other in the most basic way. Communication is now done through our phones or some app, yet we lose some part of ourself that once connected us through simply interacting with one another.
According to Lillian:This painting depicts a city street where pedestrians have blank expressions and no communication, as if they don't exist to each other. Some are office workers, some are students, and there are parents pushing baby strollers. But regardless of their identities, everyone is like robots, doing the same thing: walking with their heads down, looking at their phones, and repeating the same tasks every day.

Students Name: CiCi Xia
Title: untitled: MYTH
Work type: Pen and Ink
Category: Illustration
Size: size 16x20

Art, stories, and myth have a profound connection through narratives serving as a timeless source of inspiration for artists alike. Art can serve as a visual medium for storytelling, preserving and reinterpreting these narratives to a new generation. The use of symbolism, allegories can act as metaphors. to communicate generationally. Cici creates sequential art, like-triptychs, allowing storytelling, combining imagery and the addition to the pen textures to create a narrative.
According to Cici Xia, this work is inspired by ancient Chinese myths and stories. “I always think that the myths and history of a country are very interesting things, such as China’s Chang'e, Taoism, or ancient Chinese palace buildings and apparel. All have a unique sense of beauty.”
Throughout history, artists have drawn on religion, history, and myth to create provocative art. In ancient civilizations, cave paintings, architectural hieroglyphs, vases, mosaics and other were used to communicate these myths visually. Even now artists used these classical themes as way to reintroduce and re-educate the public reviving and interpreting these narratives to understand our identity and inspire.
